Polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) affects 5 million women in the U.S. and September is PCOS Awareness Month. PCOS is the most well-known hormonal condition that causes enlarged ovaries with numerous small, harmless cysts. Most likely, you or someone you know may have PCOS. Below, learn about PCOS, its symptoms, how to treat it, and how to spread awareness.<\/p>\n

How do you know when you have PCOS?<\/h3>\n

\"PCOS<\/p>\n

PCOS causes ovarian cysts. However, some women who have PCOS may have cysts while some may not. Other common symptoms of PCOS include irregular menstrual cycles, infertility, insulin resistance, weight gain, acne, and excessive hair growth on the face, chest, back, and other areas.<\/p>\n

How can you treat PCOS?<\/h3>\n

PCOS treatments can greatly reduce its symptoms. Birth control is a common treatment that can help regulate hormone level. However, this treatment is often used by women who don\u2019t want children. Additionally, infertility can be treated by medication and some women also use in vitro fertilization. Healthy eating and regular exercise can also reduce PCOS symptoms.<\/p>\n

How long have you known you have PCOS?<\/span><\/h4>\n

Christine:<\/strong> I was diagnosed with PCOS at the age of 25, but I\u2019ve noticed signs since 13 years old.<\/p>\n

Why did you initially go to the doctor?<\/span><\/h4>\n

Christine:<\/strong> I went to the doctor for irregular cycles.<\/p>\n

How do you treat your PCOS while making sure you’re healthy?<\/span><\/h4>\n

Christine:<\/strong> I cut out meat and dairy products and included running in my everyday routine.<\/p>\n

Would you say it’s been a journey treating your PCOS?<\/span><\/h4>\n

Christine:<\/strong> It has definitely been a journey. My weight fluctuates often, and the symptoms are ridiculous. Heavy bleeding, missed periods, and hirsutism (facial hair).<\/p>\n

Do you have any advice you’d like to tell anyone struggling with PCOS?<\/span><\/h4>\n

Christine:<\/strong> I would like to tell anyone who\u2019s struggling to remain positive. You can beat PCOS. Maintain a sedentary lifestyle. Exercise plenty, drink lots of water, and definitely change your diet.<\/p>\n
